Organic Seeds - Woad
Isatis tinctoria
Organic woad seeds from my own dye garden.
Woad has been used as a dye plant for over 3000 years, as far back as the Bronze Age and Ancient Egypt. Woad is a biennial plant, meaning that it makes leaves in its first year and then makes flowers and seeds in its second year, before dying back.
It is the first year leaves which are commonly used for dyeing, but you can also use the second years’ growth and even the seeds for dyeing. I’d encourage you to save your own woad seeds for an inexhaustible supply!
Sow in modules or small pots in spring and grow on in a greenhouse before planting out when a few inches tall. Alternatively sow direct in the final growing site. Likes full sun and well-drained rich, fertile soil. Can grow to around 4ft tall. Great for pollinators.
Packets say minimum 50 seeds, but there’s closer to 100 in there!
UK sales only due to export restrictions, sorry.
